That is positive news, François. I have to admit that I felt the US more welcoming during the Clinton years compared to the Bush years when travelling there.

It makes me prouder to be an American that you’re prouder to be in America now that we’ve elected Obama. I think I heard a collective sigh of relief after all the screaming and cheering subsided on Tuesday night. I know I slept better.

Though born here, I too felt like a foreigner during those dark year (and yet they’re still not quite over).

I have found it interesting how relief/enthusiasm has led so many blogs, listserves, etc., go off topic to, so often, celebrate the election results.

Way back when it was startling to see Lyndon Johnson saying, “We shall overcome.” It was startling now to see “conservatives” swelling with pride that we have elected an African-American to the presidency, just as if they had voted for him. I’m sure, however, that they’ll get over it.

The only moment of doubt I ever had was sometime between 7pm and 8pm Tuesday night, but it all worked out. Looks like we both bet on the right country after all.
