I agree that marketing needs to change. Not necessarily from what &lt;a href="http://www.emergencemarketing.com/archives/2006/07/whatever_marketing_become_1.php" rel="nofollow"&gt; it should have been&lt;/a&gt; all along, but definitely away from what it is today.

And yes, marketing should be a company behavior, not necessarily a department.

		<description>I was just thinking about this yesterday, this guy does sound a tad extreme, but there is no avoiding the fact that marketing is slowly but surely being forced to change it's focus and it's methods.
I think you got it right with: "Marketing is what a company should do. Everyone within the company should wear a marketing hat!"
