Why are we men so self-conscious about asking for certain types of help?

When I came back from the West Coast earlier this week, I realized that my old Ford SUV had a flat tire. I did not really feel like changing the tire myself as it is an old car and it was on an incline on top of that.

Being a member of AAA, I could have just called them and have them come and change my tire. But being self-conscious about calling a service to change my tire, I procrastinated for 2 days. Finally I called this morning…and when they sent a woman to come and change my tire, I felt like crawling under a rock from shame.

Strange and stupid feeling - really!
…after all, I am paying for this service!

  1. Thanks for sharing the shame :-) Made me think how I would react.

  2. I definitely know what you’re talking about. It IS weird…I wonder what causes that.

  3. That was a really funny post! I am afraid of checking the air in my tires because guess what, I don’t know how! And I certainly don’t want to look stupid at the pump or ask the guys there. This is a great experiment and maybe I will try it out and write about it my blog! But I think fundamentally, it is due to the product and gender association issues. I don’t we’d feel the same in a jewelery store. You’d WANT to ask for help there. However, women have NO issues in asking for help in either place. So maybe men are just fulla air? (I’m a guy, BTW!). :) ..
