Is somebody stealing my content?

As I was looking though my log I found a referring link (creative-mobs.com) from a site I was not familiar with. When I checked it out it turns out that this guy is just copying other peoples’ posts on tagging and running them on a site with some Google ads. Now I have not bothered with putting a Creative Commons license on my site, but I know that Micropersuasion has it and this article was one of many of his posts on that same portal, so was this one from Media Guerrilla, and I can go on and on.

I don’t see the benefit of creating a site that aggregates the posts belonging to a particular tag in the first place, but even if that person saw a benefit in doing that shouldn’t he a) not run ads on other people’s content and b) give proper credit?

  1. Hi François !

I’m the bad guy here ;-)
I don’t feel like I steal your content. I just make it available to a wider audience, that can use my service to find it. Do you think Google is stealing your content ?

Let me be clear on one think : I’m not making money on your back. I just use AdSense to pay for the hosting of the site (which it doesn’t), and because I wanted to see how Google manages this kind of dynamic environment. Kind of experiment more than money making.

Google is making lots of money on your content, and you just don’t care. Because they are big guys ?

About giving you proper credit : well, a link to your article on your site seems like proper credit to me. I’m not pretending that this is my content whatsoever.

Please have a deeper look at the service and you’ll see my point. You may even find it useful !!

I will soon run a blog along the service, giving explanations about my (good) intentions. Maybe then will you be able to forgive me ;-)
Until then, feel free to send me email to discuss this issue…

  2. Stephane - salut!

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I first thought about whether there was a difference between what you’re doing and what Google does - and concluded that there was. Google will show me links based on a query, while you have the static content on a static page.

Frankly it does bother me all that much (unless you were making tons of money ;-)…I was just thinking out loud…trying to stimulate a “virtual water cooler” discussion like the one we’re having now.

Good luck with the new site…I’ll keep an eye on it.

  3. François,

The site is not finished yet, you will see more interesting things happening soon.

But the site is already responding queries, have you looked at the front desk ? http://creative-mobs.com/portal/
